Yesterday, past and present Silas High School swimmers, coaches and community members celebrated two recent swimming records.
Izzy Rider, a current freshman at Silas broke the women's 100 breaststroke record on November 11, 2023 when she swam a 1:06.19 at the state finals. Her record broke the 1:06.30 record held by Maggie Eberling since 1978.
Elijah Grinstead broke the record in the men's 100 breaststroke in 2020 where he swam a :57.53 at the state meet, earning him 3rd place. His record broke the 1981 record held by Joe Eberling, who swam a :57.68. Elijah attends University of Puget Sound and is on the swim team.
Current Head Swim Coach, Rodney Cory and former coach, Dick Hannula congratulated the swimmers on their momentous achievements. Dick Hannula began coaching at Silas (then Wilson High School) in 1959 where he would coach for 25 years. During that time, Wilson won 24 consecutive state championships. Hannula went on to coach the US National Swim Team, served as commissioner in the 1990 Goodwill Games, and is a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Silas' pool bears the name Dick Hannula in honor of his many contributions to swimming.
