Preparing for the SAT and PSAT exams

Students who want to take college entrance exams should have the opportunity. The district hosts in-school exams and pays exam fees to ensure all students have equitable access.

On Wednesday, October 11, all seniors will have the opportunity to complete the SAT exam. Juniors will have the opportunity to complete the PSAT exam Oct. 16-27. Schools will be sharing PSAT dates directly with students. All juniors and seniors are encouraged to participate, even if they are unsure of their path after high school.

How-to register for the SAT and PSAT exams?

  • Juniors: are pre-registered. If students want to opt out, they should contact their CollegeBoard advisor.
  • Seniors: Tests have been ordered for all 12th-grade students.

What is the SAT and PSAT/NMSQT?

The SAT is a standardized college admission exam that measures a student's literacy, mathematics, and writing skills. It is a multiple choice, pencil/paper (in-person) exam that provides colleges with a common data point to evaluate applicants. When combined with other measures such as grade point average, courses taken, and admissions interviews, SAT scores may be considered indicators of academic success in college.

The Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized college admission exam used to determine eligibility and qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program and serves as a practice test for the SAT.

How can you help your student prepare?

Many resources and guides are available to students and parents to help prepare for the SAT and PSAT/NMSQT exams. The College Board oversees the exams and recommends students take a full-length practice exam two weeks before test day. Practice exams help students build confidence and see where to focus their study efforts. It is also a good time to review test day requirements. Parents can also check out the Coach Tools through Khan Academy. And thanks to a new partnership with Tutor.com, TPS students have access to free, live tutoring, including college exam prep. Students can access this service through their Schoology account.
