Silas High School—Principal’s Weekly Message—February 2, 2025—
Silas Core Beliefs
- Every student can learn and grow at high levels.
- Every student brings valuable prior knowledge to school.
- Every student shall have a trusted adult at school with whom they connect.
- Every student shall have access to guaranteed and viable curriculum.
- Every student shall leave Silas High School prepared for post-secondary options.
The February Equity Theme centers around: TRUTH
Our morals, values, experiences, and choices shape how we see and interact with the world. This lens, or how we understand what is true, is our starting point for making sense of a diverse world and relating to others. It’s important to know that everyone has their own lens for how they view the world and make sense of it. There is no right or perfect lens since each one is constantly evolving. We should be curious enough to learn from others to reshape how we understand the world.
Discussion questions for at the dinner table, in the car, text threads, etc.:
What is something that just don’t make sense to you?
Have you ever had a drastic shift in how you see the world?

Be sure your contact information is updated in ParentVUE
Snow is in the forecast, so please check ParentVUE to ensure your contact information is up to date. If the weather impacts our school schedule, we’ll contact you based on the information in ParentVUE.
If it needs to be updated, contact our office at silasattendance@tacoma.k12.wa.us.
This is also a good time to review your emergency contacts in ParentVUE. When you provide emergency contact information, consider adding trusted adults (neighbors, friends) who do not live in your household. ParentVUE allows you to update your emergency contacts directly in the app, without contacting our office.

February days off school
In February, there’s no school for students on these days:
- Friday, Feb. 14: Scheduled as a snow make-up day only if needed (let's see what happens with the weather this week!)
- Monday, Feb. 17: Presidents Day; school district offices will be closed
- Tuesday, Feb. 18: No school for students; teacher work day
Request courses for 2025-26 in StudentVUE
Students in grades 6-11 can use StudentVUE to request courses for the 2025-26 school year. This is one of the first steps in scheduling for next school year. To request courses, students and families can go to the “Course Request” tab in StudentVUE to view or change courses.
Online course requests will start as early as Feb. 3. We’ll have more specifics from our school counselors soon.
K&G Prom Rewards
K&G (over on S. Pine St., off of 38th, across from the police station) has a 10% off sale for students and families, especially in anticipation of formal dances. Need some work attire? Formal wear? Don’t forget that Ali’s Prom Project (Home | Ali's Prom Project | Tacoma, Washington) is always an option for new, FREE, dresses, but K&G is a great option for suits and ties and shoes. See the flyer below. (Apologies that I saved it as H&M instead of K&G. HA!)

What inspired me this week?
It’s Black History Month!
Let’s start it by learning more about Dr. Dolores Silas, a true trailblazer. I wish I would have had more time with her. She passed away shortly after our school was named for her. If you have not seen the videos below, they are required viewing for Ram Country. Check it out.
See the links below to learn more about her. (While they are labeled the same, they are three different videos.)
