Silas Preview of the Week, May 4, 2025

Silas High School—Principal’s Weekly Message—May 4, 2025—

7 weeks of school remaining.

Silas Core Beliefs

Every student can learn and grow at high levels.

Every student brings valuable prior knowledge to school.

Every student shall have a trusted adult at school with whom they connect.

Every student shall have access to guaranteed and viable curriculum.

Every student shall leave Silas High School prepared for post-secondary options.

The May Equity Theme centers around: Inclusiveness

What does it look like to be inclusive at Silas?

The fastpitch softball team celebrated seniors on Friday, and a party was had by all!

Unfortunately, my photos with people in them did not turn out well AT ALL. (I don’t want any seniors or student-athletes upset with me for bad pics. HA!)

Also, I observed in some classrooms this week and was pleased with all the strategies teachers are using to engage students.

FLASH Curriculum for Family Life and Sexual Health

Dear Silas HS, Parents or Guardians:

Your student will be participating in the school-wide FLASH curriculum on Thursday, May 29th in the Silas Auditorium. Tacoma Public Schools adopted the FLASH (Family Life and Sexual Health) curriculum for all students in grades 5-12 in June 2018 in alignment with Policy 2125, Policy 2126, and Regulation 2126.

Washington State Law also requires that students (grades 5-12) receive information annually concerning HIV/AIDS). Students will learn about how the disease attacks the body's immune system and what can be done to prevent the spread of it. Students will be allowed to ask questions during the presentation.

How can students/families preview materials and/or opt-out?

·         Via the Family App:  Parents log into their account and the opt-out form is available here by clicking Family_App_Info Opting Out.docx

Alternative learning experiences, unrelated to Sexual Health, will be provided to students who have submitted opt-out waivers from their Parent/Guardian.

For questions regarding the FLASH curriculum, please email Mr. Frier at tfrier@tacoma.k12.wa.us

What inspired me this week?

I attended the Raising Girls fundraiser luncheon this last Wednesday. If you do not know about Raising Girls, they provide hygiene bags for girls AND BOYS and deliver to schools in our area. Form more information, here is their website: Home | Raising Girls

For a bag, just ask in the main office!

GO RAMS.
