Silas This Week in Athletics, Feb. 26, 2025

The Winter sports season is almost officially over. The only sport in action is Unified Basketball who will be playing for a State Championship this weekend.

Over the past week, post-season play was in full swing with the WIAA State Championships in Boys Swimming and Boys and Girls Wrestling this past week. Plus, Boys Basketball advanced to the WIAA Hardwood Classic! Individually, Silas had two individual State Champions crowned this past week, one in Wrestling and one in Boys Swimming.  Silas also had two wrestlers who were state runner ups in their weight classifications.

Believe it or not, the Spring Sports season cranks up next Monday, March 3rd. Spring sports schedules have been added to this week’s edition. Time does fly doesn’t it:

Here’s are results for your Silas Rams in post-season play this past week:

Basketball – Boys

Silas Boys Basketball has had a very busy week, and on their journey, have qualified for the 2025 WIAA State 3A Boys Basketball Championships! Here’s the run down for the last week:

2025 District 3/4 West Central District/SW Washington 3A Boys District Basketball Championships

Last Thursday (2/20/25), our Rams played at Bellarmine Prep in a loser’s bracket game against the Lions, with the winner advancing to the state tournament and the loser to play in a winner advance and loser out game on Saturday. Unfortunately for our Rams, Bellarmine Prep cruised past Silas 58 to 40. Offensively, it was a tough night for the Rams, their 40 points was the lowest total for a game this season.

With the loss, they advanced to the 7th Seed to State, loser out game on Saturday (2/22/25) at Mount Tahoma. They played the Timberline Blazers. Silas grabbed the victory 53 to 42. The first half of this game was at times choppy as offense was difficult to come by. The game was tied at half 19 to 19. Silas was the better team throughout much of the game, though struggled to take advantage of that early in the game. Silas found some offensive rhythm in the second half and began to pull away from the Blazers, punching their ticket to WIAA State Championships.

2025 WIAA State 3A Boys Basketball Championships

The road to the Tacoma will not be an easy one for the Rams. The State Bracket for 3A Boys includes 20 teams. Only 12 teams advance to the Tacoma Dome. For Silas to make it to the Dome, they will have to win two games.

That first game was yesterday (2/25/25) when our Rams traveled to Renton to take on the Liberty Patriots. In a game that Silas had a chance to win, they sadly lost to the Patriots 63 to 51 in a game that was much closer than the final score suggests.

With the loss, Silas is eliminated from the 2025 WIAA State 3A Boys Basketball Championships. They finished the season with an overall record of 16 wins and 14 losses.

Congratulations Rams on an excellent season, reaching the WIAA State 3A Boys Basketball Championships this season!

Here’s Coach Rod Corey with a recap of the State Meet:

The competition at state was one of the fastest ever.  There were several state records that fell as well as All American Times.  Not only a fun meet to be a part of, but at times a show to watch. Congrats to all of our State team.

Xander Dumas swam the 200 and 500 Free.  He qualified for finals on Saturday. He swam a season’s best in the 200 free prelims, and finished 15th in the finals.  In the 500, he qualified with a season’s best and finished 16th in the finals.

Seth Balderson swam in the 50 back and 50 free adaptive events.  In the 50 free he just got out touched to finished second in State.  In the 50 back he blazed to a first place finish as a State Champion setting not only a meet record, but a State record!

Nariman Afsoun, Taylor, and Jack Lemieux swam in the prelims of the 50 free.  A fast field was separated by 100’s of a second.  They finished 18th, 19th and 23rd respectively in the state.

Add to those three, Xander for the 200 free relay.  They qualified for the finals and finished 11th with a season’s best time. Dat Pham qualified for State in the 100 back.  He finished 24th and is already looking forward dot breaking 1 minute next season.

Our 400 Freestyle relay finished out the long weekend with a season’s best.  Led by Taylor, Daniel Diedrick, Nariman and anchored by Xander, they finished 13th.

Congratulation’s Rams on an outstanding season and showing at State!

Congratulations Seth on your first and second place finishes! In addition to being a State Champion, Seth holds the State Meet Record and State Record in the 50 Yard Backstroke Adaptive.

Silas had seven girls compete in this year’s State Championships. None of the Girls finished in the top eight to place. Placing is not easy. For example, Each wrestler is wrestling in a field of 32 wrestlers.  In order to place, a wrestler needs to win at least four matches and lose only one. Lose early in the tournament, making it to the top eight is even tougher as wrestlers may wrestle well beyond five matches. Six of the Silas Girls did score in this year’s Championships!
