Silas Weekly Message 9.20.26

Good Evening Silas Students and Families,

The Silas Rams did a great job stringing 5 days of solid work together and knocking out our first full week of school. We have to build our endurance and stamina at the start of each school year and the first 5 consecutive days gets us reacquainted with the energy it takes to do this work and run this schedule. Make sure we rest on the weekends and recover. We’ve all earned it and rest will be mandatory as we build out the year.

Silas info and dates:

Open House at Silas – October 8th, 5PM-6:30PM

Conferences at Silas – October 22nd Arena Style in the gym. We will have conference sessions in the afternoon and evening this year. Times are coming soon.

Staffing Update- We are expecting our first round of solutions to overcrowded classrooms very soon. Silas has seen a significant increase in enrollment and solutions should include additional sections offered and additional staff. It looks like we could know more about solutions for Silas by mid-week. If we get impactful information before end of week, I will get it out to everyone.

Reminder about closed campus- Silas students need to remain on campus during the school day unless they have a specialized schedule. The closed campus is in effect all day and this includes lunch.

Secure Access- This is a reminder that campus exterior doors and gates need to remain secure during the school day. Students should not open doors or gates for other students or visitors. The front office is always open and available for access during the day.

Maritime 253 and TPS High Schools are working to get coordination down for the new programming. Here is a link to Maritime|253 bus route information: Bus Routes - Maritime|253 Skills Center

Senior Parking reminder- Senior parking spots that were purchased and painted are considered reserved during school hours at Silas. Please honor this tradition and refrain from parking in Senior parking spots while school is in session.

Keeping students safe at school

We all have a role to play in keeping our schools safe.

  • Bullying is not tolerated. Bullying, harassment, or intimidation can take many forms, including online posts, and verbal or physical acts. Report harassment, bullying or intimidation here.
  • Schools are weapon-free, drug-free, tobacco-free, and alcohol-free zones
  • Threatening a school is a crime. Any threat to a school, student, or staff member is taken seriously. If you see something, say something. We encourage everyone in our community who sees or hears a threat to call 911 and notify the school.

When should kids stay home from school?

Take a look at our website for tips to understand when students are too sick to be at school and when they can return to normal activities.

If you're looking for a healthcare resource, MultiCare and SeaMar offer school-based clinic services to all Tacoma Public Schools students. The clinics are at Mount Tahoma High School and Lincoln High School. Get more information about the services they offer and when:

Please complete CNEEB form

Have you completed the CNEEB application? I’m asking all families to complete the application before Oct. 1. It's used to help decide how money is distributed across the school district, including our school. It can also impact families directly by reducing fees for athletics, before and after school programs, and college applications. Complete CNEEB form.

Cashless ticketing for athletic events now available

We use GoFan as our ticketing system for high school athletic events. With GoFan, you can buy tickets online in advance and scan them directly from a mobile device at the gate—no cash, no paper tickets, no lines. An all-season pass for high school football, soccer, volleyball, flag football, wrestling and basketball costs $125. A 10-game pass costs $60.

I kicked off some video messaging this past Wednesday at Silas. I will be sharing brief messages/tips/lessons with staff and students at the start of each month this year. Our first message was about the importance of establishing Ready Routines before school each morning. We all need Ready Routines and I encourage you to share the versions that exist in your family with the members of your household.

Have a great Sunday evening. Go Rams!
